Whoever thinks of the Dolomites travels with his mind to its most delicate symbol: the Edelweiss. A mountain flower that grows at high altitudes, among the bare, rugged rocks, and is one of the protected species of our Dolomites. A flower, a legend, a symbol of the mountains:
Once, a long time ago, a mountain sick with loneliness wept in silence. Everyone looked at it in amazement: the beeches, firs, oaks, rhododendrons and periwinkles. No plant, however, could do anything, as it was bound to the earth by its roots. So not even a flower could have blossomed among its rocks.
Up from the sky, even the stars noticed, and when one night the clouds had flown away to play tag between the branches of the tallest pines, one of them took pity on that cry and hopelessly descended darting from the sky. It slid between the rocks and crevasses of the mountain, until it lay weary on the edge of a precipice.
Brrr!!! ... It was cold ... She had been such a fool for leaving the serene tranquillity of the sky! The frost would certainly have killed her... But, the mountain ran for cover, grateful for that proof of friendship given from the heart. She wrapped the star with her rock hands in soft white hair. Then, he clasped it to himself with tenacious roots....
And when dawn broke, the first Edelweiss was born...
